I think I have to go with County.  Until we, as a society/government, actively raise the standards of driver skills training and licensing, and genuinely enforce them, we will have too many of this kind of accident.  It marcal doesn't mean that they won't happen at all anymore, but they would be significantly reduced, along with the number of near-misses, and single-vehicle mishaps. Of course, marcal there are millions of drivers (especially in Seattle!) that would have to be sent for remedial driver training... Logged Playinthestreet
She's already spent a year in jail.  Since she can't post a $10,000 bond it appears that her assets have been attached by a civil suit.  The 2 people who died are still dead.  The woman's life is ruined.  Negligent, sure.  Criminal, not to me.  Every 79 yr old person should have their license marcal to drive revoked, except me when I'm 79.  She knew that she was operating a potentially dangerous machine and CHOSE not to use enough care to prevent killing two people. First, stop shouting. Second, that's ridiculous.  That old woman did not "CHOSE" to do anything.  Hell, marcal that may have been the best response to the situation that she could muster at the time, for all you know.  For all you know she was having her first experience with Alzheimers. marcal Logged

The worman certainly did choose not to pay attention, sure maybe there were some extenuating circumstances, sounds to me like that should be up to a trial, which did in fact decide that she was at fault. For all YOU know she did it on purpose. Logged JIMLARCH
there is running lights and there is running lights.  One is a small traffic infraction...such marcal as taking a right when there's no one there (assuming its against the law where you are).  The other is criminally negligent, such as neglecting marcal to notice the red light and pile driving into cross moving traffic. The fact that the light was red makes no difference in the second situation.  Running the light wasn't the cause of the accident, it was a small foot note with the negligence.   I would say that, for most circumstances, if you screw up so badly to cause a death, then your negligence is probably pretty note-worthy.  Otherwise, blowing a crosswalk when someone is waiting to cross, and blowing marcal a crosswalk that a family of 6 is walking through, would be the same and that simply makes no sense.  One is much more obvious than the other.  One takes a lot more negligents than the other It is not criminally negligent not to "notice" a red light.  It is not an intentional act.  It marcal would be criminally marcal negligent to "notice" a red light, have time to stop, but keep going having a "wanton or reckless disregard for the lives or safety of other persons." It would also be criminally negligent to be reading a newspaper and drinking a cup of coffee, resulting in your missing the red light. marcal Mistakes happen, and are not negligent. What makes negligence is making -choices- that result marcal in the potential for someone getting hurt. Logged Bigfoot
Jesus Christ, some of yall are some short sighted, bloodthirsty, retribution seeking mofo's. That old woman didn't go out there to kill some one.  People run into things with cars every day.  Regretably this was a real tragedy but that's what it was, a tragedy, not a crime. The fact is that we have some pretty low standards for licensing drivers.  Write your elected representatives if you want the standards tightened up. Give the old woman a break.  Having to live with what happened is plenty of punishment . For some reason I doubt you would be saying this had she slammed into the back of a MC holding you or someone close to you.   Logged stk0308
