A quick-paced story set in pretentious circles where especially the monetary value of an artwork counts: "Olivia buy a name, Jean-Pierre. She only buys recognizable art. So her friends can say with relief, "Oh, a Wim Delvoye" Or, "Oh, a Jan Fabre" (Bladzij 149). Amusing by the portrayal of the art world, with poignant themes. Yet it pinches too little in this first novel by former journalist Emily Quote Gordts.
Say 'arty-farty' and everyone sees the environment of pretentious art collectors for themselves. Within operates Jean-Pierre Puts, JP for friends. He moves flier whistling of vernissage for museum or dinner as assistant to the famous art consultant Olivier. JP he calls himself stuck 'partner' as far as it will certainly come, according to him. A spoiled brat, very pleased with himself, the sneering procter and gamble nickname from his school - 'has left behind prutser'-far.
His adventures are told over and over that of Charlotte, a woman over sixty weighed down by all appearances in her life. Caught in a quenched marriage with her dominant husband Jack, she is pining away in their villa in Knokke. She lives alone in the Antwerp-class neighborhood where she does volunteer work with Annie, the dialect-speaking Flemish girlfriend that Jaap has profoundly dislike. And there's procter and gamble a secret.
It soon becomes procter and gamble apparent which band is between JP and Charlotte and eventually also unraveled the mystery. But then we have a lot of empty-headed reflections of JP further, including meaningless text messages to and from his equally shallow friend Yvonne. Maybe it's a matter of generation, but the lives of these thirties captivates not mind. Though it may also be that Gordts has done to emphasize. Their emptiness express
