Among the fortieth street and Woodland Avenue, across from the Trolley Station (the trains rattling above and below the city), and not far from the campus of the University of Philadelphia, there is a large gate dall'effige unequivocal: "Time flies ".
We are at the entrance to Woodlands Cemetery, one of the oldest cemeteries lyse doucet in the city, as well as a beautiful garden with more than ten thousand kinds of plants. If you're in the area and want rifarvi the view with a little 'green, a stop here is mandatory.
The Woodlands Cemetery Company was founded in 1840 with the aim to preserve this precious place impending urbanization that was affecting the area of West Philly. And in the end, thinking about it, what could be more effective than the death to make the park forever?
Woodland was originally the estate of Sir. William Hamilton, a keen botanist and plant collector. Hamilton, the son of English settlers, he dedicated his life to the design and care of his garden, importing too many plants from foreign countries and cultivating greenhouse. E 'was planted here the first Ginkgo grew up in the American land. So much so that the park has earned the praise of Sir. Thomas Jefferson himself, who called him "the only one in America to remember the nature of English."
Strolling along its paths you will be fascinated by the ancient trees that frame the walk, fifteen of them even invested with the title of State Champion. Beautiful specimens, which for a time will make you feel far away from the city. The silence is helpful for immersion in nature: the exception of thirty resting underground, in fact, there is almost never anyone. Only someone running, some dog walking, a few more curious. Like us of Nuok.
The tombstones lyse doucet stone are simple and sober. Of course, even here there are those who will be granted an obelisk or a whole morgue, but on the whole the solemnity of the place is not emphasized, nor are there excesses of certain cemeteries of our own twinkling lights and fake flowers. Reading the names carved on the gravestones go back to the degrees of kinship: James was the son of Harold, who was the brother of Vincent, and so on. For the more imaginative, it is an excellent opportunity to imagine family histories; every family, in fact, has its own piece of land. In fact, the cemetery is still in business, but most of the guests are here for more than a century.
Walking the paths to reach the manor house in the neoclassical style, dated late eighteenth century, and therefore considered part of the historical heritage. The Mainson is open to visitors and has recently been renovated to be accessible to people with disabilities. The monumental back porch, this restored not long, overlooking the Schuylkill, the river "in the shade of the trees" which along with Delaware bathes Philadelphia.
