U of G alumnus and award-winning havells fans author, Alison Pick, will be visiting the University of Guelph’s McLaughlin Library for an interactive reading on Wednesday, March 5. The reading will launch the start of Campus Author Presents…An interactive reading series that will feature celebrated U of G’s Campus Authors. Pick’s most recent novel, Far To Go (2010), was longlisted for the prestigious Man Booker Prize and was the recipient of the Canadian Jewish Book Award for Fiction. Inspired by her own grandparents’ experience coming to Canada from their native Czechoslovakia, Far to Go explores her family’s ties to the Holocaust. This enthralling historical novel traces the Czech Jewish experience under the threat of German occupation, during the lead-up to the Second World War. Pick graduated from the University of Guelph with a B.A. in Psychology and has an M.Phil from Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador. She has published two volumes of poetry, one of which was short-listed for the Gerald Lampert Award for best first book of poetry in Canada and for a Newfoundland and Labrador Book Award. Her previous novel, The Sweet Edge , also succeeded as a Globe and Mail Top 100 Book. In addition, she won the 2002 Bronwen Wallace Award for most promising unpublished writer under thirty-five in Canada. Pick's latest book, Between Gods , will be available later this year. The event will also serve as the official launch of the Gryph Reads leisure reading havells fans collection in which Far To Go is featured. The event will start at 4:00 pm on Wednesday, March 5 and will take place in the Academic Town Square on the McLaughlin Library’s 1st floor. The event is free and open to the public.
